Nebraska football recruiting efforts most recently started focusing in on an under-the-radar defensive back prospect out of Macon, Georgia. However, it appears that if the Huskers are going to land Tony Mathis, they’re going to need to steal him away from West Virginia.

The strong safety from Westside High in Macon announced on Twitter Saturday night that he’d received an official offer from the Nebraska football program. The 2024 prospect isn’t the first under-the-radar player the Huskers have come calling for and he won’t be the last.

However, the fact that the Huskers offered and are apparently going to spend some time recruiting someone who hasn’t been rated as a consensus prospect yet and is considered a heavy lean to a Big 12 school is something entirely different.

Mathis is considered a very heavy lean to the Mountaineers, according to On3. It appears that the strong safety has a special lean towards that part of the country, considering that one of the other schools that is reportedly high on his list is Appalachian State.

It also turns out that the Huskers are going to need to beat back a conference rival. Right about the same time that Nebraska football came calling, the Michigan Wolverines did the same.

Always interesting when that kind of thing happens in the college football world. It appears that when one school realizes that a prospect isn’t getting the love and attention he deserves, other programs soon realize the same thing.

The real question now is what the Huskers can do to stand out from a growing crowd. As of now, Mathis hasn’t said whether he might be taking a longer look at the Nebraska football program anytime soon.

It’s a safe bet that the coaching staff would like to see him come to town for the Junior Day event that has so many top prospects in town. Whether Nebraska football recruiting efforts can make that happen is still an open question.
