Hubert Davis made a move with the North Carolina Tarheels team that should remind Nebraska football fans of Scott Frost, and that’s not a good thing.

After the NCAA Tournament bracket was revealed and North Carolina wasn’t a part of it, the Tarheels did what had leaked out earlier in the weekend and rejected an invitation to the NIT. According to USA Today, it turns out that Hubert Davis’s team held a vote of the players and they voted to end the season rather than play in what amounts to a consolation tournament.

It’s the vote of the players and the fact they decided they didn’t want to play anymore that should give North Carolina fans pause and Nebraska football fans can explain exactly why that is the case.

Following the 2020 football season – the same season where Scott Frost famously crowed his team would play anyone anywhere – the Nebraska football team decided not to accept an invitation to a bowl game by a vote of the players.

There were reasons for that vote to go the way that it did, clearly. The end of the 2020 season was still smack dab in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. The Huskers also didn’t really earn a bowl game, considering they posted a record of 3-5 in the shortened season. On the other hand, had they gone to that bowl, it would have been the only one Scott Frost went to. It also would have allowed a program still trying to find its footing to get a little more work in what was indeed a shorter season.

Since the program decided not to go to that bowl game, it’s head coach went 5-10 and was fired. And that’s why North Carolina fans should be a little wary about a squad so willing to call it a day, and a coach that is willing to let them.

There are obviously reasons why the Tarheels might want just to call it a season. It was a disappointing and challenging road. And certainly, it was longer than eight games like the Nebraska football team.

North Carolina started this season ranked number one in the country. They finished unranked and, while posting 20 wins, didn’t have the kind of resume that got them to the dance. But they still had a chance to play together for a few more games. Maybe even iron things out and get ready for next season. And they decided they didn’t want to play anymore.

From one Nebraska football fan to North Carolina basketball fans, that’s a red flag that you’re going to want to pay attention to in the very near future.
