Since Matt Rhule arrived in Lincoln, there have certainly been a number of interesting changes to the Nebraska football team’s roster. One of the most interesting and perhaps the most confounding was the departure of a freshman linebacker who had a very good season and seemed to be lining up for a great sophomore campaign.
Then Ernest Hausmann decided that he wanted to play elsewhere. That Nebraska football needed to be left in the rearview mirror.
Hausmann ended up entering the transfer portal and after visiting, schools like Iowa decided on the Michigan Wolverines as his new home. Following a fantastic first season, it appears that he’s getting rave reviews in Ann Arbor in the early going. That’s before he’s even played a snap for Jim Harbaugh and his coaches.
In an article laying out the top newcomers in every Top 25 team heading into the 2023 season, ESPN pegged the former Nebraska football player as earning that honor for Michigan.
"“Don’t be surprised if linebacker Ernest Hausmann has a similar effect for the Wolverines’ defense, which struggled in the CFP semifinal loss to TCU. Hausmann started seven games as a true freshman at Nebraska, recording 54 tackles with a sack and a fumble recovery. He joins a linebacker group led by top tackler Junior Colson and talented rusher Jaylen Harrell but still wants more reliable options. Hausmann fills a clear need for Michigan in 2023.”"
While Hausmann might indeed be a nice addition to the Michigan Wolverines, he represents a pretty big loss for the Huskers. It’s not entirely clear why he decided to depart the Huskers. It should be pointed out that Hausmann had been recruited by Harbaugh and company the first time around. It’s possible that instead of wanting to see if Matt Rhule can indeed turn the Nebraska football team around, he decided to go somewhere there was a bit more stability.
It seems there are some out there who think he made the correct choice.
