When it comes to the baffling college basketball rankings for this week, that Purdue is still in the Top 5 has to be right at the top.

There was a time when Purdue was obviously the best team in the country. For whatever reason, that is very much not the case anymore. However, it feels like the national media hasn’t quite gotten the message that the Boilermakers have really hit on some hard times.

It seemed as if Purdue had a stranglehold on being the best team in college basketball. And then February rolled around. And suddenly the Boilermakers are having problems beating anyone with a pulse.

In fact, Purdue has now lost four of their last six games. Those losses include two defeats to Indiana, a loss to Maryland and Northwestern. Despite a February to remember, it appears that the pollsters still believe that Purdue is one of the best teams in the country. However, the votes in the latest AP college basketball poll are simply baffling.

Purdue is still ranked fifth in the country and it certainly doesn’t seem like they should be ranked all that high anymore.

Perhaps the situation is the way it is because Purdue is still in first place in the Big Ten. However, they are that high in the standings thanks to a very good start to the conference season. If they hadn’t been so good earlier in the year, it’s likely they’d be much farther down in the standings.

Why the college basketball pollsters have decided that the Big Ten powerhouse still belongs in the Top 5 because of where they are in the conference seems more than a little baffling.

At this point, one has to wonder just what Purdue has to do in order to top in the college basketball rankings.
