Three former Nebraska football players played their first games for their new XFL teams on Sunday as the new league officially spun up.

Unfortunately for Nebraska football fans, all three former Huskers that are on XFL rosters did not exactly shine over the weekend. All three were on teams that played on Sunday on the defensive side of the ball.

It appears that Freedom Akinmoladun, Damion Daniels and Chris Jones all have their work cut out for them if they’re going to really make some noise in the spring football league. That could be a sign that the XFL is a bit better than people expected. It could also be that these three Huskers have some serious improving to do if they want to have a chance of getting back to the NFL anytime soon.

Akinmoladun and Damion Daniels are actually teammates once again on the XFL squad, the St. Louis Battlehawks. The pair of defensive linemen did play together in Lincoln for one year. It was Freedom’s final year for Big Red, while it was Daniels’ first in 2018.

On Sunday, Daniels did play a few snaps but didn’t log any statistics. Meanwhile, Akinmoladun had a solo tackle and an assist in his brief bit of playing time.

The other former Nebraska football star who played his first NFL game was defensive back Chris Jones for the Seattle Sea Dragons. Like his former Huskers’ teammate, the DB had a solo tackle and one assist for his new squad.

When it comes to being on the winning and losing side, the two former Nebraska football defensive linemen were on the winning side as their Battlehawks beat the San Antonio Brahmas. Meanwhile, Jones and his Sea Dragons were on the losing end of 22-18 score against the DC Defenders.

All three former Nebraska football players will do battle in week two of the XFL season as the Battlehawks will travel to face the Sea Dragons.
