One Nebraska Cornhuskers football player is doing something in order to pay tribute to the late, great Brook Berringer. That and more in today’s news.

It’s going to be a long time until the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team kicks off its season, but there’s still plenty of preparation going on. That includes some players deciding what numbers they are going to wear in 2023.

That brings us to the Nebraska football team’s punter in Brian Buschini. The returning start took to Twitter on Monday night to announce he was making a change to the number he’ll be wearing. In 2023, Buschini is going to wear number 18 and he didn’t just pick that number out of a hat.

"“Husker fans! I have switched my number to 18 to honor Brook Berringer! He was a fantastic player but was most importantly a follower of Jesus Christ! His story is special to me and I consider it an honor to wear his number! GBR”"

Buschini’s tribute is a fitting one considering that the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team is once again trying to return to what made the program so many years ago now.

For those that don’t know, Berringer played for the Huskers from 1992 to 1995 and split time at quarterback with Tommie Frazier. His most extensive playing time was in 1994 when he threw for 1,295 yards and 10 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also ran for nearly 300 yards.

Berringer sadly died in a small-engine plane crash in April of 1996, just a few months after he and his teammates won yet another national title.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers news

The win over Penn State on Sunday gave a little bit of a boost to the Nebraska basketball team’s NET rating. The Huskers are now 96th in those ratings. Up from 99th the week before. Still no where near an NCAA Tournament bid but it’s something.

University president Ted Carter usually keeps a pretty low profile when it comes to the athletic department but on Sunday, he showed off a new motorcycle that has Nebraska Cornhuskers fans drooling

Other sports news

Now that Tom Brady is officially retired, he’s taking the next step. He’ll be going into broadcasting but not right away. It turns out he’ll take that turn in 2024.

Syracuse Orangemen basketball head coach Jim Boeheim is old school. He’s so old school as a matter of fact that he lost his cool when talking about recruiting and NIL. And then he tried to backtrack and pretend as though he wasn’t actually trying to roast several other schools.

This is where, while I have a lack of trust in Fred Hoiberg and what he’s doing, I have to be happy that the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ coach is saying crap like this.
