Nebraska Football Recruiting: Huskers haul in familiar face in new tight end

Nebraska football recruiting efforts ramped up considerably over the weekend and it looks like those efforts paid off. Ismael Smith Flores is the first commit from a weekend that is said to have more than a few players that could eventually end up being Huskers.

That’s only one of the reasons why this 3-star prospect from the 2023 class stands out. There’s also the fact that he’s well known to those leading the efforts of Nebraska football recruiting. In particular, he’s well known by new tight ends coach Bob Wager.

Ismael Smith Flores hails from none other than Martin High School in Texas. That was the school that employed Wager until about a month ago. That’s likely one of the big reasons that Smith Flores was considered a heavy lean to Iowa back in November. And why things changed quickly once Wager was hired, and Nebraska football came calling.

The 6-foot-5 athlete who projects as a tight end for the Huskers announced he’d pulled the trigger on his commitment on Twitter.

"“Had a great time this weekend on my official visit to the University of Nebraska!! Loved everyone there and I’m blessed to be able to call this place my home!!”"

Nebraska football recruiting got the win in its new tight end at a spot that clearly has been a big focus for the new staff. After all, the Cornhuskers also just landed a transfer tight end in Arik Gilbert out of Georgia.

Nebraska Football Recruiting Lands Ismael Smith Flores

In landing the Arlington, Texas product, the Huskers beat out a couple of other Big Ten squads. That includes the Iowa Hawkeyes, who were thought to be the ones that would get his commitment this fall.

Rutgers and Indiana were also in on the chase for the 3-star prospect.

The way the winds are blowing for Nebraska football recruiting today, it appears that Ismael Smith Flores might just be the beginning for Monday.
