Nebraska football recruiting efforts took a very big hit on Tuesday night. In fact, it’s safe to say that the hit the Huskers took was the biggest loss of the Matt Rhule era. At least when it comes to adding new players.
Nebraska football recruiting thought it was going to be adding a big offensive line transfer from Baylor. Instead, Micah Mazzccua pulled the trigger for the Florida Gators.
There were some signs that the Huskers might have been in trouble. Not the least of which was that Mazzccua took a last minute visit to Florida. There were some who were surprised that he took that trip after he seemed to be pretty sold on what Nebraska football recruiting was pitching.
At this point, it’s hard to know exactly why he chose the Gators over the Huskers. Certainly Florida had a better season in 2022 but not by a great margin. Maybe he thinks he can lift them to the next level that they seem on cusp of reaching every year.
Considering that the offensive lineman hails from Maryland, maybe it’s as simple as Mazzccua wants to stay in a warm weather state after spending the last few years in Texas. Whatever the reason, he’s gone and the Huskers are now going to be looking for Plan B.
That Plan B is likely Stanford offensive lineman Walter Rouse who is also supposedly announcing this week. However, while there was some indication that the Cornhuskers were going to win the services of the Baylor transfer, there really isn’t that same feel for Rouse.
If Nebraska football recruiting strikes out on both prospects, it’s not entirely clear where the program might turn if it is still trying to haul in another offensive lineman. In fact, it might simply be a deal where they’ll go into 2023’s season with the O-line it now has.
