Nebraska Football Recruiting: Virginia Tech commit is Matt Rhule’s first offer
Now that Matt Rhule is officially the Nebraska football head coach, he’s not wasting any time. In fact, he’s got the Nebraska football recruiting apparatus up and moving on the same day that he got the job.
Rhule has a lot of questions that are going to be coming his way when he stands in front of the press as the head coach on Monday afternoon. Whether or not he’s going to keep Mickey Joseph is one. How he’s going to turn around the Nebraska football recruiting efforts and the team itself will be a few others.
Matt Rhule took a step towards answering questions on how he’s going to handle Nebraska football recruiting on Saturday night when he dished out his first official offer. And it just happened to be to a player that is already committed to another school. Virginia Tech commit Dante Lovett appears to be the first to get a call from Rhule as the Huskers’ head coach.
Lovett told 247Sports that he felt quite privileged to get the offer on Saturday night.
"“It was a big surprise. I was like, ‘Wow.’ I’m the first recruit that he has offered since getting the job back in college. That’s what he told me.”"
Lovett is a 3-star defensive back prospect that has been a commit to Virginia Tech since May. However, there’s something that has convinced Matt Rhule that he might be able to use the Nebraska football recruiting efforts to steal him away from the Hokies.
The defensive back actually has quite a few offers on his resume, including other Big Ten teams in Maryland and Michigan State. The offer is also an interesting one because there is talk that Lovett got the offer. After all, one of Rhule’s former players with the Carolina Panthers turned him onto the high schooler.
Despite the flattery that Lovett must be feeling in being the first prospect that Matt Rhule has reached out to, it appears the Nebraska football recruiting efforts still has a big hill to climb. The Virginia Tech commit said he’s still solidly with the hokies.
