The Nebraska football team has settled on its head coach in Matt Rhule and now the game of wondering what happens when the Huskers take the field in 2023 officially begins. It’s a new era in Husker football in 2023.

Likewise, when the Huskers do get into the meat of their schedule next season, they’ll be facing a brand new head coach at the helm of one of their historical rivals. Colorado followed the Huskers’ lead in firing its head coach early on this season. Like the Cornhuskers, they haven’t officially named a replacement just yet, but by all accounts, the Buffaloes are in the home stretch, and it appears CU is looking at a splash hire.

Deion Sanders would certainly count as that splash hire. If he does get the job at Colorado, it would be an interesting matchup with the Nebraska football team for no other reason than there was a moment when some thought that Prime Time might be plying his trade in Lincoln. BuffaloesWire is reporting that now he might be doing the same in Boulder.

Sanders has been one of the hotter names in the coaching search when it comes to programs just a small tier below the Cornhuskers. Last week, both Colorado and South Florida were said to be interested in the Jackson State head coach. A new report says that CU put forth a “very impressive offer for Coach Prime.”

Since the Huskers and Buffaloes no longer play each other every year, this hire would normally just be interesting. But with Nebraska football journeying to Boulder for its second game of the season, this becomes rather big news.

Rhule will be coming off a season-opening tilt against Minnesota. That game is likely going to be hard enough. But some Husker fans might remember when a relatively new coach in Scott Frost went up against an up-and-coming head coach at Colorado and when the Cornhuskers ended up getting handed a loss, things went south quickly.

Those facts, as well as once again reigniting the Nebraska-Colorado rivalry, Deion Sanders being on the opposite sidelines and Matt Rhule needing a big win in his first season, would certainly add some drama to the whole thing.
