The Nebraska football team is still very much on the lookout for its next head coach. One name that hasn’t been mentioned a whole lot yet, but probably should be is the Carolina Panthers’ head coach, Matt Rhule. In fact, there is at least one analyst who believes the former Baylor head man would absolutely be a “dream” of a hire if the Huskers made that call.

One of the reasons the Nebraska football team hasn’t been tied to Rhule more often is because, at the moment, he has a job that it seems unlikely he’d leave. The reason he’s getting mentioned at all is that he’s not expected to keep that job beyond this season.

In fact, most people think he’ll be losing that job before the season is up. In some parts, there’s a weekly “Matt Rhule watch” to see just when the Panthers will fire him.

Paul Myerberg of USA Today recently put together a list of the schools that are on the lookout for a new head coach and who would be a “home run hire” for each school.

There are all kinds of reasons why Rhule would make sense for Nebraska football when you look closely. There’s the fact that he managed to build up not only Baylor but also Temple from almost nothing.

That’s almost certainly why there are Husker fans out there convinced he’s the guy for the job. That’s certainly why Myerberg thinks he’s the dream hire for the Cornhuskers.

"“He’s won in very adverse circumstances at Temple and Baylor, both times taking a team from one win to some of the best years in program history.”"

Myerberg also explained why he thinks there’s a chance the dream could come true.

"“Rhule’s brand of football hasn’t played so well in the NFL as he comes under intense scrutiny in his third year with the Carolina Panthers. Will he be available? If so, he’s an out-of-the-stadium home run for the Cornhuskers.”"

Matt Rhule has gotten mentioned as a possible candidate before but just hasn’t had the same kind of cache as some of the other candidates. If he does get fired by the Carolina Panthers in the next few weeks, things could absolutely heat up for the Nebraska football team and its search.
