Nebraska Football Tailgate: Sooner or later it was going to happen

No, not that…Oklahoma was going to ride their wagon on into town! OU plays Nebraska football Saturday morning at 11:00 am on FS1. Fox Sports people are already in town setting up their stage for their version of game day. If you have time, go hang out and be a loud crowd for the tv people. The weather will be sunny with a slight breeze but not enough to keep you cool at 80 degrees at game time, and in low 90’s by the afternoon. Pack the sunscreen.

Last week was crap. The Huskers defense had more holes than Swiss cheese. It had a less effective middle than a donut. That might be why Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph took away the blackshirt jerseys. I like it. It’s a statement that reaches further than laundry.  And speaking of dirty laundry… there’s a reason why you put it down the chute and forget it.  I’m not going to go there.

What I will say is that if someone asked me who I would support, 1) the guy who had a LOT of things handed to him on a silver platter all his life, or 2) the guy who has had to work hard for everything he’s achieved, I’m in bandwagon #2 all day, twice on Saturday. Nebraska football IHC Mickey Joseph is legit. He’s no-nonsense. He’s “here’s how you do it.” And there is accountability. These were all things said the minute he got hired as the wide receiver coach. It’s all resurfaced again.

These shirts were already flying out the door on Monday.

Huskers QB Casey Thompson looked good again! 318 yards in the air and 4 touchdowns. I like it. Running backs Grant and Allen combined for 214 yards and a pair of touchdowns. I still like it. This week we most likely get Huskers tight end Travis Vokolek back which is critical because we are playing the stingy Oklahoma defense. An extra blocker is necessary. A true test is coming. If you’re interested in the odds click here.

The Huskers Defense probably gets linebacker Nick Henrich back, albeit with a club/cast on his hand. I think some shuffling in the secondary could provide some help too like maybe moving defensive back Omar Brown back to safety. But what do I know? Bottom line, stop the Sooners from moving the ball!

What I’m focusing on in this week’s Nebraska football game really are the other things. I’ll observe body language, energy, and attention to the little things like finishing blocks and tackling. I don’t have any wise words on what will happen other than to say it will be a great day in Lincoln for an old rivalry. I’d love to win. I think we could win. But I’m not going to define the day in the W/L column after the week that has transpired.

To the good news! The trip down memory lane has me nostalgic for things in my past: Huskers winning football and Butter rum lifesavers. I’ve created jello shots that emulate the latter. Mix orange jello with 1 cup boiling water until dissolved. Add in 3/4 cup of buttershots schnapps and stir. Pour into the cups and chill!

Morning tailgates are rushed and not enough time to hang out. That being said, I’m looking forward to hosting a bro trip from New Jersey to see the game and atmosphere, my awesome cousin Kim and her husband from Oklahoma are in town, my BIG RED Breakfast date, David, is in town from Texas, and of course my regular crew. It’s a new season, folks. Stay supportive of the team. Be good ambassadors for our Huskers brand. And of course, GO BIG RED!
