Nebraska Football: Brent Venables ‘hated’ that Casey Thompson chose Huskers
The more that Casey Thompson plays for the Nebraska football team, the better he looks. It’s a safe bet that’s one of the reasons that Oklahoma Sooners’ head coach hated that the former Texas Longhorn quarterback picked the Huskers over his own team.
While the Sooners are favorites to beat the Nebraska football team on Saturday, the Huskers already have one win against OU under their belts this year as the two schools went head-to-head for the services of Thompson.
Speaking to The Oklahoman, Venables made it clear that it irked him more than a little that he wasn’t able to get the transfer signal-caller to come to Norman.
"“I hated it. We tried to get him here in the offseason and thought we might have an opportunity. I know he considered us. But I think he saw a great opportunity (at Nebraska), a unique opportunity. Happy for him."
It’s no wonder that Venables was hoping to bring Thompson to Oklahoma. The now Nebraska football quarterback had arguably his best game of 2021 in the Red River Showdown. Almost upending Top-10 ranked Oklahoma, Thompson threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns while not throwing a single interception. Texas’ defense let him down in the 55-48 loss.
Now Thompson is on another team that seems to have a very solid offense and a suspect defense.
Around the same time, the Huskers were recruiting their new transfer quarterback, and Oklahoma lost both of theirs to the portal. Venables definitely thought he had a shot at Thompson but also brought in former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel for a look. That seemed to be enough to convince Thompson to pull the trigger for the Nebraska football team.
On Saturday, one of the most storied rivalries in college football will be reignited for the last time for who knows how long. Here’s hoping Casey Thompson can lead the Nebraska football team to another victory and make Brent Venables hate what happened this winter a little bit more.
