Nebraska Football: Huskers’ coaching search reportedly started weeks ago
Before Nebraska football interim head coach Mickey Joseph has even had a chance to address the media in his new position, rumors started flying fast and furiously about who might replace recently departed Scott Frost. On Sunday, whispers became roars that Matt Campbell is the front runner to take over the Huskers’ post. On Monday evening, a new darkhorse candidate in the form of Jamey Chadwell emerged.
For those who might not recognize that name, you can be forgiven. Despite having success at his current school, he’s been toiling in relative obscurity as the head man for Coastal Carolina. The good news here is that since he’s taken the helm of the Chaunticleers, they have had quite a bit of success having won 11 games in back-to-back seasons. It’s where he’s been doing it that raised eyebrows. Of course, it’s possible that the Sun Belt is going to be getting more credit in Lincoln these days.
Perhaps the most interesting part about how Chadwell’s name came to the forefront is that it appears to have been confirmed by his current boss, Coastal Carolina Chair of Athletics (AD) Joe Moglia.
Moglia took to Twitter on Monday evening and said that it doesn’t surprise him at all that Chadwell was “one of the names linked” to the Nebraska football coaching position. Moglia then dropped the real bombshell of the entire Twitter thread.
"“I was contacted a couple weeks ago by someone close to the decision making process and was asked my thought with regard to a replacement. I said Jamey has done a great job for us at Coastal Carolina, I love him, and we would not want to lose him, but he would absolutely get the job done at Nebraska.”"
It probably doesn’t need to be pointed out that Scott Frost was still very much the Nebraska football head coach “a couple of weeks ago.” And yet it appears that Cornhuskers Athletic Director Trev Alberts was already looking around for Frost’s replacement.
While that might surprise some, rumblings coming out of Lincoln was that things had taken a decidedly adversarial turn right about the time fall camp was getting set to wrap up. One has to wonder if when NU supposedly reached out to Moglia, who has Nebraska football ties, Coastal Carolina didn’t let Frost or someone in Frost’s camp know what was happening.
The tweet from Moglia today is certainly interestingly timed. It seems aimed at creating some more drama around a situation that’s already got plenty of drama already.
It’s hard to ignore the timing and speed with which Frost was jettisoned by the Nebraska football program when put in the light of Moglia’s social media message.
