The Nebraska basketball team will get an official visit from Florida grad transfer Keyontae Johnson on Wednesday night following visits to Kansas State and Western Kentucky last month.
The 6-foot-6 wing was once a first-round NBA draft prospect before a heart condition sidelined him for a couple of years. He hasn’t played basketball since a shortened 2020-2021 season when he averaged 16 points per game and shot 64.1 percent from the field.
In his last full season, the potential Nebrasketball addition averaged 14 points a game while also dishing out 7.1 assists. He shot 54.4 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point land.
According to On3.com, this visit to see the Nebraska basketball program and facilities is part of a wrapping up of Johnson’s recruiting. Robin Washut reports that the guard should be making a final call on his new school within the next week.
He’s reportedly deciding between the Huskers, Western Kentucky, Kansas State and Memphis. At the moment, he hasn’t visited the Tigers but there are apparently some efforts to get him on campus before he pulls the trigger.
The visit on Wednesday night is the continuation of what has been a very big week and a half for Nebrasketball. Last week, Fred Hoiberg and company received a commit from shooting guard Eli Rice.
The Cornhuskers also landed in the final five schools in the running for the services of Oklahoma 4-star prospect Parker Friedrichsen.
Of course the addition or potential addition of some new talent is big enough news for the Huskers hoopers. However, there was another big piece of news this week that broke that could help determine just who else Fred Hoiberg adds to the team.
The Huskers finally filled the open assistant spot that was created when Armon Gates went to Oregon. Ernie Zeigler, who most recently served as an assistant to Mississippis State’s Ben Howland was named the newest member of the Nebraska basketball coaching staff on Wednesday.
