As many of you probably remember, former Xavier guard C.J. Wilcher committed to the Nebraska basketball program on March 26. When I wrote about his  decision to come to Nebraska from the transfer portal, I said that he could be a lethal shooter, and give Nebraska more dependability in that regard.

Wednesday, we heard a little bit more from both coach Fred Hoiberg and Wilcher himself. In reading Hoiberg’s comments, it seems as though he believes the player will be able to fit  in the Nebraska basketball system very nicely. Averaging 3.3 points as a freshman last season, Wiltshire certainly has a ton of potential and upside.

More from Husker Corner

Measuring in at 6-foot-5, 195 pounds, Wilcher was a four-star recruit out of high school. Nebraska basketball assistant Matt Abdelmassih recruited him, and it wasn’t meant to be initially. Now, the player has a chance to make a big impact for the Nebraska basketball program. With a bunch of very talented players either already in or  coming into the program, Wilcher should fit right in.

As  Hoiberg told the media, he understands what a special player Wilcher is, and what he will be able to bring to the program.

"“You can never have enough shooting, and C.J. is an elite-level shooter,” Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said in a news release. “He was one of the best shooters nationally in the class of 2020, but his game is much more than that. He has good size on the perimeter and uses it to create space and has an aggressive mindset. He played significant minutes at Xavier and that experience will help him in the transition to the Big Ten.”"

For his part, Wilcher feels very confident that he will be able to fit into the Nebraska basketball program rather seamlessly.

"“I feel like I can learn a lot from (Hoiberg) to prepare me for the next step in my career. I think I fit well in the system. He was a shooter when he played, and he gets shots for his guys, and I think I fit well in that,” Wilcher told the Journal Star after he committed. “He also lets guys play through mistakes and be able to make plays for other guys as well as themselves. I think that fits my game.”"

I think he will too for what it’s worth. He certainly has the talent and ability to be able to make an impact on an already-talented Nebraska basketball roster. He is just another piece to add to an extremely talented group.

I’ll be interested to see what he does. His upside is incredibly high, and I feel confident that Nebraska basketball will be able to maximize his strengths. He is a very offensive-focused player. Nebraska basketball has had good success in the transfer portal over the past couple of seasons. There is a very good chance that Wilcher should be able to help continue that trend.
