Nebraska Basketball: Trey McGowens takes center stage with Allen gone
This is his time to shine for Nebraska basketball.
By now, you have probably all heard the news that Teddy Allen has been dismissed from the Nebraska basketball program. It is certainly a big blow to the program in terms of what he brings as far as athleticism and scoring . However, we can’t belabor his absence too much.
Now, it’s all about the next man up, and who can fill Allen’s shoes for at least the end of the regular season and tournament play. For me, this is where Trey McGowens can shine. Not only can he shine, but he can also parlay this into something positive for next year.

He is second on the team in points, as he averages 10.7 per game. he heads into Monday’s game against Rutgers off of an 11-point performance against Minnesota. Prior to that game, he had a 16-point performance against Illinois. Aside from a couple of bad games that have seen him score in the single-digits, he has been as consistent as they come. Now, he will need to not only be consistent, but be the team’s leader offensively.
He can do it, as he has the skillset to really be successful. He can both drive in the paint and score from the outside. Not only that, he can do it with efficiency. That was evident against Minnesota on Saturday, as he went five-of-seven from the field and made his only three-point shot. Efficiency has been a calling card for him this season.
He has also managed to get the job done defensively, recording 1.5 steals per game to lead the team. Sure, the defense has been lackluster in some portions of the season. However, the effort has seemed to have been there for the majority of the Nebraska basketball players and that includes McGowens.
This is his moment to shine. This is his moment to take over the team and really show what he is made of as a leader. We know what he can do as a basketball player. There is no doubt that he is very good. Now, this is his chance to show that he can with the team on his back for the last couple of games of the season. Who knows, this team has nothing to lose and everything to gain from here on out.
The future is a very bright, and McGowens is a huge part of that. It all starts on Monday against Rutgers.
