Nebraska basketball needs Allen to step up on Friday.

Heading into Nebraska basketball’s Friday night contest against Illinois, one player needs to step up if Nebraska wants to have any shot at winning this basketball game. Teddy Allen needs to play better, after a decent showing on Wednesday evening, and a rough showing on Saturday against Michigan State.

On Wednesday, he recorded 12 points on four-of-10 shooting. The scoring part wasn’t the bad part on Wednesday. It was the five turnovers. At times, he looked disorganized and not fully involved in the game.

In what was a rough game for everybody, he certainly did nothing to stand out. it was frustrating because we know what Allen can play like, and we know how much of a game-changer he can be. Unfortunately, he just did not have it on Wednesday.

Going back to last Saturday against the Spartans, he recorded only three points on one-of-10 shooting in 23 minutes of play. He did record three rebounds and two assists. Nevertheless, his lack of production in the scoring department did not necessarily make his other contributions worthwhile. It was a very rough showing for a player that has been a tremendous spark for this team.

Combined with not playing on Monday against Minnesota, this has not been a stellar week for Allen. Nevertheless, he does have a chance to right the ship here against a tough Illinois team.

Nebraska basketball needs him to play at a high level if they want to win this game. With his struggles this week, it made me realize just how much this team misses several of the aspects he brings to the table at times

For one, he is the team’s leading scorer with 16.9 points per contest. With that comes a variety of ways that he can score. He is not afraid to shoot the three-point shot, he is not afraid to drive to the basket, and he is not afraid to draw contact and get to the line. All of those things are an incredible asset for Nebraska basketball.

They need him to play better than he has over the past couple of games. If he doesn’t, they could be in line for another blowout loss. They will already have their hands full against a very talented Illinois team. They are going to need all of the scoring help they can get. Allen is certainly a big part of that. I will be interested to see what he does on Friday, as Nebraska needs him to step up and contribute.
