The Nebraska football wide receiver should have a chance to make his mark.

When you take a look at what Nebraska football brought to the table on offense, there were some positives. Although it was frustrating sometimes to see the offensive unit play, there were some spark plugs that brought hope for the future.

One of the spark plugs, who I think will have a bigger role in 2021 is Zavier Betts. It was very evident as soon as he stepped on the field that he had skills that could not be taught. This was a good thing.

More from Husker Corner

For one, his speed was definitely noticeable. He used his speed to dash away from Nittany Lions defenders against Penn State on a 45-yard touchdown. As soon as he got the football, he took off and ran. That raw speed is going to be helpful both after the catch and in terms of separation from defenders.

Secondly, he gets up the field quickly. The combination of his speed and good instincts as to where he is on the field help with that. That was something I noticed as soon as he got the ball.

When you look at his numbers statistically, his production was certainly encouraging. He had 12 catches for 131 yards in six games.

Especially for a new wide receiver getting acclimated to his surroundings, those are good numbers. Saturday night, I said that the wide receiver room was particularly thin. Betts is one of those players who will be counted on heavily for the 2021 season. Although it may be a lot to ask of a sophomore wide receiver, I believe he can get the job done.

If I was the coaching staff, I would certainly look to get him the ball as often as possible next year. He has the ability to make big plays, and be a game-changer at wide receiver. The only problem that I see is, the quarterbacks last season had difficulty getting the ball to the outside wide receivers. Some of that was due to playcalling, while some of it was due to the skill of the quarterbacks.

Whatever the case may be, Betts should figure to have a big role in 2021. He is somebody that I could see making a big leap, and fully establishing his role in the Nebraska football offense. There are certainly going to be opportunities for him to succeed, and I can see him making the most of it.

Next. Huskers should look at Isaiah Bowser. dark

Betts’ time is now, and I can safely say that he should be in line for a big 2021 Nebraska football season.
