Nebraska baseball certainly has talent on its roster.

Nebraska baseball is getting some love nationally. Pictures Cade Povich and Spencer Schwellenbach  have both been included in the Division I Baseball 2021 Top 100 Draft Prospect Rankings.

We take a look at what Povich did in the small sample size there was of a season last year, he led Nebraska in strikeouts with 26 and also ranked second on the team in earned run average. He tallied seven or more strikeouts in three out of his four outings and one of his most memorable games was February 23 against Arizona State. He struck out eight batters in that contest.

When you look at what Schwellenbach did in a short season last year, he was tremendous. In 15 games, he had a .295 batting average with a home run and five runs batted in. He had  18 hits in 61 plate appearances.

Both of these players are very good, and have been key pieces for the Nebraska baseball program sense they got to Lincoln.  Personally, I think Schwellenbach is a little more polished than Povich as a player. Yes, I know they play different positions, but Schwellenbach has had more time in the collegiate baseball ranks. For Povich, there is little more mystery as to the type of player he will develop into. However, that’s not a knock on him I think he will be very good.

With the current talent on the roster, as well as the recruiting  classes coming in, there is definitely reason to be optimistic about the baseball program. Will Bolt has this program headed in the right direction, and I’m confident he will continue to build it into a winner. Unlike the football and basketball programs, there has been a recent track record of success with the baseball program. This also helps the program when it comes time for recruiting.

I would love to see more Nebraska kids come to the program, and I think that is happening as we speak. Time will tell how it plays out, but  the local kids coming to the program appear to be very good. I’ll be interested to see how everything pans out, and I’m confident that Nebraska baseball program will be able to win sooner rather than later. Right now, the program is still  in the building process. However, I think we are going to see the fruits of the labor of the process very soon. Who knows, we may even see it the next time they take the field.
