Nebraska football has made the top five for a defender.

In case you missed it, 2021 three-star strong-side defensive end Mandela Tobin released his top five on Tuesday. Nebraska football was a part of the group.

In addition to Nebraska, Fresno, Kansas, Kansas State, and Nevada were also in there as well.

Tobin is the 100th overall strong-side defensive end in the 2021 class, and the 149th overall player in his class from the state of California per the 247Sports Composite rankings. He is definitely a prospect that has flown a bit under the radar.

What could he bring to the Nebraska football program? He has the perfect size for a defensive lineman. Measuring in at six-foot-four, 270 pounds, he is explosive as soon as the ball is snapped.

One of the things I noticed when I watched his film is that he is able to get penetration into the backfield rather easily. This allows him to be a disruptor and a nightmare for opposing offenses.

He would fit very well in the Big Ten, as defensive lines need to be quick and strong. Tobin fits that criteria. He is quick off the ball, and he can be a disruptive force on the line. Not only that, he has speed. The days of lumbering defenders are over. Now, defenders need to be almost as quick as wide receivers.

Nebraska has seemed to have recruited the offensive side of the football quite well. It’s the defensive side where they have lagged a bit behind. Tobin would definitely be a nice get for the program, as he would give the defensive line an instant weapon that can stop both the run and the pass.

It will be interesting to see if Nebraska can land him. The 2021 class is already extremely strong, with playmakers on both sides of the ball. With the  decommitment of several linebackers over the course of the past couple of weeks, adding Tobin would certainly strengthen the defense by quite a bit. A commitment from him could make up for the losses at linebacker. It obviously wouldn’t completely fill the void, but adding a player of his caliber could certainly help.

Next. Names to know in 2022 class. dark

Especially as we head into the latter part of the year, landing a commitment from a big time playmaker like Tobin could continue building on what has been a very successfully-recruited and talented class. There is no doubt that the 2021 class is going to be something special.
