The Nebraska athletic director made sense of all the rumors on Tuesday.

It’s been a wild couple of months as Nebraska football fans and Big Ten football fans alike try to figure out when the season is going to start. Late Tuesday night, Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos added some more fuel to the rumor fire.

Tuesday, Moos said that schedule options were being discussed for the start of the season. Right now, the sub- committee who is doing the schedule options have been considering a Thanksgiving model. You may remember that reports were flying all around on Tuesday that the season could start as early as October 10. Moos quickly shut those down.

It’s interesting to note that the athletic director acknowledges that there has been a lot of support for it a January start. However, I certainly agree with him that it is tough logistically. It’s asking the players to basically play two seasons in a calendar year. However, he is not ruling have that out either as noted in a report from Brian Christopherson of 247Sports.

To me, the Thanksgiving model which probably sees the season starting in the late November makes a little bit more sense than the original proposed October model. This will at least give players time to practice and train in preparation for the season. However, I don’t really think it’s safe to say that one model is going to be the definitive answer over another.

However, the Thanksgiving model is certainly gaining traction.

"“Right now, the earliest that we’ve discussed is a Thanksgiving model,” Moos said. “There has been a lot of support early on for the first of January. Personally, I think it gets a little scary if we start any later. Because … the body can’t really in you guys to move up butbounce back with another season just down the road. I really think the earlier the better, but we’ve got to be careful and make sure the pandemic is under control to some degree and that our testing protocols are consistent and working.”"

I’ll be interested to see if this happens, and I do feel a little more confident that the Thanksgiving model is something that is viable. As I said yesterday, if Moos says it, I trust it at this point. I really don’t think he is one for smokescreens in this particular situation.

I certainly think that there is a fair amount of optimism on his part. However, he has shown that he wants to get this done and get back on the field. I certainly admire his steadfast approach through all of this and I’m happy that he is able to provide a little bit of clarity in a dicey situation.
