The newest assistant for Nebraska football is detail-oriented.

Doing the little things right. It’s something that the Nebraska football program struggled with last season. Fortunately for them, their new coaching hire seems to excel at making sure the little things get taken care of.

Matt Lubick is known as an offensive guru of sorts. Combined with his experience with a Scott Frost-led offense, that could be a good combination for Nebraska football. As noted in a report from Brian Christopherson of 247Sports, Lubick’s organization is something that stands out. Not only do his organizational skills stand out, his attention to detail apparently is a quality that all coaches on the staff have noticed.

Organization and attention to detail. That was something the Nebraska football program struggled with at times last year. Whether it be a missed play call, a missed block, or a missed tackle, the little things kept getting in the way of success for Nebraska. With a difficult schedule in the 2020 season, the little things hampering victories cannot continue to happen.

Given Lubick’s success at Oregon, it’s no surprise that he is extremely organized. His organization will have to shine through for a Nebraska wide receivers unit that is extremely young. Couple that with the team’s leading receiver leaving abruptly, and you have a difficult recipe for a coach still getting used to his environment.

If anything, the praises for Lubick’s organization are encouraging. Nebraska certainly needed that edge on the sideline last year. Hopefully, Lubick can provide it this year. So far, it sounds like Frost is impressed with the way his new coach is trying to set the tone for the program. For his part, Lubick seems to know exactly what type of team he wants to see on the field in 2020.

"“I’m a big believer that the more you prepare the better off you’re going to be, whether it’s a position meeting, whether it’s an opponent, when you go out to practice,” Lubick said that day. “The more prepared, the more efficient things will run and the better the players have a chance to win and be successful. My whole thing on organization is, No. 1, take advantage of every ounce of time and make it efficient. How do you do that? That’s always a work progress. Right now we’re studying what we do well, now how do we improve that.”“If there’s something that doesn’t fit, we’re moving onto the next thing,” he said."

I really enjoy that last part of his quote. Too often last season, it seemed like Nebraska was trying to make things work that just weren’t there. From sending Dedrick Mills running up the middle, to screen passes that were immediately sniffed out by the opposition, it seemed like they were beating a dead horse at times. It was frustrating to watch, probably for everybody involved.

If Lubbock can bring some ingenuity and creativity to the offense, that will certainly help Nebraska in 2020. They desperately need it, as they look to contend with the big dogs in the Big Ten. Any advantage is a good one for Nebraska football program looking to take the next step. Their newest coaching hire may be able to provide that.
