Kobe King is no longer with Nebraska basketball.

A once-promising part of the new era of Nebraska basketball has left the program. Per coach Fred Hoiberg, Kobe King has left the program.

I thought that King would be a fixture for the Huskers during his time here. I was extremely excited to see him come to Lincoln and show what he could do. This signs of his ability were definitely evident while he was at Wisconsin. Last season, he recorded 10 points in just over 28 minutes of play.

Many of you may remember the Wisconsin game against Nebraska on January 21. In that contest, he played 30 minutes, going three-of-11 from the field and zero-of-two from beyond the arc. He was also three-of-four from the free-throw line.  He didn’t necessarily have a big night that night, but his team sure did.

Although those numbers weren’t truly a reflection of his skills, his stellar play was evident throughout the 2019-20 season.

In the Badgers’ 84-64 win over Indiana on December 7, King played well. In 29 minutes of play he went 10-of-15 from the field and one-of-three from beyond the arc. He scored 24 points in 29 minutes of play and was efficient in doing so.

At the end of the day, the player is going to do what’s best for the player, I can understand where King is coming from there. I just wish he would’ve done this sooner or not come to Nebraska at all.  The program could have used that open spot for someone who wanted to be here long-term.

Hoiberg released a statement on Friday afternoon.

"“Kobe King has informed us that he will not be attending the University of Nebraska for personal reasons,” head coach Fred Hoiberg said in a statement. “We respect his decision and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”"

I know hindsight is 20/20. I certainly do not like to belabor what could have been. However, it’s just very frustrating when you think of it in terms of a wasted roster spot.

In any event I wish him the best. I hope he finds a situation that works for him, and I hope he can play at a high level. He’s a fun player to watch. I just wish we could have seen him in Lincoln.
