Nebraska Football should have an interesting competition at quarterback
Who does not love a little quarterback competition this time of year? As the regular season gets closer, Nebraska football has an interesting battle brewing at quarterback.
Steven M. Sipple wrote an interesting piece on Sunday that detailed how Luke McCaffrey might make things a little bit more difficult for Adrian Martinez. However, it wasn’t exactly a piece that guaranteed McCaffrey the starting job. Sipple also gave some nuggets into how determined Martinez has been to make sure there is a competition.

It was certainly interesting to hear Sipple’s point of view on the whole subject. Throughout the piece, there were some things I agreed with and some things that made me think a little bit. You have heard me talk at some length this spring about how McCaffrey is in a good position to create some type of competition for the starting quarterback job. Personally, I don’t think that hasn’t changed things. However, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it has lit a fire under Martinez.
If it didn’t light a fire under Martinez, I would be slightly concerned. Much like Sipple alludes to in his piece, Martinez was thought of as the de facto starting quarterback last year. There wasn’t really any competition breathing down his neck. We all knew that McCaffrey had potential, but he was still a little bit raw. This offseason, I truly believe it has been a whole new ballgame.
I am a big fan of Luke McCaffrey. I would not be upset if he landed the starting job. However, I do think things are a bit better for Martinez. Mostly, the offensive line will be a big key to his success. Now, the line has a whole season of experience under their belts together.
At the end of the day, I do believe that Martinez will be the Nebraska football starter week one. I would be surprised if McCaffrey is under center. Sipple has a different point of view, and ultimately he knows more than me.
"By the way, the better McCaffrey practices, the better it is for everyone involved, including Martinez. Especially Martinez. At this time last year, Martinez had a stranglehold on the starting job after shining brightly as a true freshman in 2018. Trouble is, he practiced at times last August like someone who had a stranglehold on the job. There wasn’t always enough urgency.I’m told he’s already been in that mode this spring. Some Nebraska fans believe it’s a foregone conclusion that Martinez will again get the keys to Frost’s offense. I disagree that it’s a foregone conclusion. After touching on the QB position during an interview with Frost a couple of weeks ago, my read is Martinez won’t be handed anything."
It’s great that Martinez is showing urgency. When he is at his best, I believe he can be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten. I too believe that the needle is favored in Martinez’s direction in terms of starting. I got the sense that Frost really loves Martinez. That is okay, Martinez is a great player. I do believe it is his job to lose unless otherwise noted. A quarterback competition would be great. I would love to see one.
I do think it is Martinez’s job to lose. I do think McCaffrey is breathing down Martinez’s neck a little bit. Whatever the case may be, it should make for an interesting summer. There is never a dull day in Lincoln.
