Nelson should be a tremendous asset to the Nebraska Football program.
You may have heard the saying “The future is bright.” For Nebraska Football, I definitely think that is the case. They have a lot of talent coming into the 2019 season, and a lot of freshmen that can make an impact right away.
Seeing young players grow and become stars is fun. It is even more fun to follow them when they are local kids. Outside linebacker Garrett Nelson would certainly fit into that category. This site did a story about him in April that basically said he was impressing the coaching staff. Now, there are rumors that he could see the field come the fall, something that is not a guarantee for all freshman. He is an intriguing player, and one that Nebraska Football coaches should be happy to have on their side.

It’s no secret that the defensive line is very talented right now. Tyrin Ferguson, Alex Davis, JoJo Domann, and Caleb Tannor are all am going to be important pieces to that defense. Nelson certainly has a lot of work ahead of him in order to pass those players, but there is no doubt he is strong and skilled. He plays an aggressive style of football, something that should endear him both to the Nebraska coaching staff and his teammates. He’s a guy that I truly believe will be able to make an impact as soon as he gets the opportunity.
In their series on most intriguing players, the Lincoln Journal Star did a preview on Nelson. I liked everything they wrote about him, and it kind of tied in with the thinking that he is an aggressive player. If anything, that is what the Nebraska Football defense will need in the coming years.
"When Nelson played in the Class B championship game at Memorial Stadium last fall, he made a play behind the line of scrimmage, came up screaming and threw the bones. On the sideline, NU defensive coordinator Erik Chinander looked at another coach, smirked and said, “He’s a madman.”"
It would not be a stretch to say that I could see him on the field in smaller roles. Kickoff coverage or punt coverage would certainly be an intriguing role for him. That would be right up Nelson’s alley: Run really fast and hit somebody. For a player who has a constant motor like Nelson does, special teams is perfect because it allows players to just put their head down and go.
I would hate to stand in Garrett Nelson’s way. It doesn’t seem like he will let anything stop him from trying to get the job done. That certainly fits in well with what the coaching staff is trying to do, and that sort of effort should endear him to Nebraska fans. Nebraska Football is a program built on hard work and grit. Nelson seems to have plenty of that, and I can’t wait to see what he can do on Saturdays.
