Nebraska Football added another tight end to the roster on Tuesday.

Nebraska Football added a tight end to the position group on Tuesday. Former Rutgers player Travis Vokolek has transferred to the program. He made the announcement on Twitter Tuesday.

As some of you may recall, he took a visit to Lincoln last month. I am excited about the addition to the program. I think he will be able to help Nebraska moving forward. I don’t see him taking over the starting tight end spot, but he should be able to battle for depth at the position.

As much as I am excited, I am also a bit confused. Why does Nebraska need more strength at the tight end position? To me, this means that they do not like the depth they have already. Katerian Legrone must not be showing enough progress to be a legitimate backup tight end. I don’t think that is the case with Jack Stoll, which is the reason I am not too worried about this move when it comes to  Stoll’s position. He should be fine right where he is.

If Legrone was struggling, I would try to work him into the role slowly. He is only a freshman after all. Tight end is certainly not a position of need, it is interesting that Nebraska has chosen to address it. Vokolek will have to sit out a year unless he is granted a waiver by the NCAA according to multiple media reports.

Nebraska also has sophomore Austin Allen , Kurt Rafdal, Legrone, and Chris Hickman. In particular, I’m excited to see the skills that Hickman should bring to the table. By all accounts, he is a tremendous playmaker

I’ve certainly excited to have Vokolek in the fold. However, I question the timing of this move and whether or not the  spot on the roster could have gone somewhere with more pressing needs. Maybe the coaching staff liked what they saw out of him and thought he could fit immediately into the offense. Maybe they truly do not like what they see out of the tight end depth. Whatever the case may be, I am puzzled by this move.

Nevertheless, I wish him the best of luck and hope he succeeds for Nebraska Football. Although he does not have many statistics on his resume, he could provide an impact on an offense that should be potent in the coming years. This was a low-risk, high-reward move on the part of the program, and it may very well pay off.
