Nebraska Football hosted a tight end on Tuesday.

As the summer months begin to creep in and Nebraska Football begins the efforts to improve their roster for the fall, this means they could potentially bring in some players from other areas. Tuesday, they hosted ($) former Rutgers tight end Travis Vokolek as they look to add another member at the position.

As a recruit, Vokolek was the 12th overall player in the state of Missouri and a three-star prospect per the 247Sports Composite rankings. He committed to Rutgers on January 28, 2017.

It’s interesting that Nebraska football is hosting him for a visit. This leads me to several questions. First, what do the Cornhuskers see in Vokolek that they are not getting on the field? Secondly, are they getting enough production out of the tight end position, or is that a group underperforming? I’ve wanted Jack Stoll to perform well, and he certainly has the potential to do so. However, Tuesday’s development leads me to believe that Nebraska Football is looking for more than what they are getting from that position.

Admittedly Vokolek doesn’t have a ton of statistics on his resume. His best year came last year when he recorded 16 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Averaging 11.5 yards per catch, he certainly made the most of his opportunities. However, if the program is looking for an accomplished depth piece, he may not be the answer. His statistics are almost identical to Stoll’s, who had 21 catches for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 11.7 yards per catch.

I have a hard time believing that Vokolek would come to the Nebraska Football program being comfortable in the role of a backup tight end. If he was to commit to the program, two scenarios immediately come to mind. He would either be challenging Stoll for the starting tight end position, or he would be fighting for a spot with Katerian LeGrone. Either way, the program sounds like they’re treating this like Vokolek would be in the positional picture.

Nebraska Football can certainly use the depth at tight end. There’s no doubt about that. However, I look at this as a little  worrisome. They are reviewing this position with capable guys already on the roster. It sounds like the program is looking for secondary options, and I do give them credit for addressing a potential area of need. You certainly can’t fault them for wanting to get better.
