Wandale Robinson has given Nebraska football fans a glimpse this week of what he can do at All-American bowl practices, especially as a receiver.
If you aren’t a hardcore follower of recruiting, you may not know that this Saturday is the All-American Bowl, a highly touted high-school all-star game that has three future Nebraska football players in attendance.
One of those players is four-star, all-purpose running back Wandale Robinson, who is one of the gems of Nebraska football’s 2019 recruiting class.
At 5-foot-9, Robinson is a dynamic athlete, who played running back in high school and will at Nebraska, but also has the skills of a pass catcher. His route running is incredibly impressive and so are his hands.
Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to know that Robinson was going to be an exciting player for the Huskers. But after watching highlights of practice from the All-American Bowl, in which Robinson was running routes and burning defensive backs, I started to get excited thinking about all the ways in which Scott Frost will use the all-purpose talent next season.
When you think about the collective ability of Robinson and Maurice Washington to catch the football out of the backfield, it’s got to be scary for opposing defenses. Washington caught 24 passes for 331 yards and even caught a touchdown pass against Iowa.
Washington also got 77 carries as a runner and racked up 5.9 yards per attempt and while Robinson is a tremendous pass catcher, his running ability shouldn’t be discounted. What’s really exciting is the potential for both Washington and Robinson to line up in the backfield together.
With those two guys and the threat of Adrian Martinez to run the ball too, defenses would have to focus on the run and play like the zone read, which could be run with either back. However, at the same time, both Robinson and Washington are dangerous receiving threats, which is going to give defenses a lot to think about and Frost a lot of different options.
Nebraska football already had a dynamic offense in 2018 and even though Devine Ozigbo and Stanley Morgan are graduating, Frost will have Martinez, JD Spielman and Washington, as well as Robinson to work with and after watching Robinson in practice this week, it’s an intriguing prospect to think about 2019.
So, if you don’t have anything to do Saturday afternoon, you should check out the All-American Bowl Saturday, which will also feature future Nebraska football players Ty Robinson and Bryce Benhart, as well as Noa Pola-Gates, who is the Huskers top remaining target.
