Nebraska football has put together a really strong 2019 recruiting class and it got even better on Wednesday when Ty Robinson chose the Huskers over Alabama.
If you want proof that head coach Scott Frost is building the Nebraska football program into something special, then look at what the Huskers did on early national signing day.
The Huskers were looking forward to three big announcements on Wednesday and none of them were bigger for Nebraska football than Ty Robinson, who was also being pursued by Alabama, USC and Oregon, among others.
Nebraska picked up a couple of recruits in Brant Banks and Jimmy Fritzsche Wednesday, but the biggest question was with Robinson, a 6-foot-6 defensive end that the Huskers wanted badly.
Could Nebraska, following a 4-8 season, hold off a charge from Alabama, the defending national champs? What about USC? Oregon? Both of those schools have strong traditions too and each is much closer to home for Robinson than the Huskers are.
Yet, despite all of that, Robinson announced his decision to join the Huskers Wednesday in another promising moment for Frost and Nebraska football.
More than just beating out Alabama, the Huskers are landing a really good football player. Robinson is the fifth-ranked player in the state of Arizona and he is also the 16th-best strong-side defensive end in the country according to 247sports.
With his size and athleticism, Robinson can help the Huskers in a couple of ways on defense. For starters, he can get to the quarterback, which is something every good defense needs to be able to do. Nebraska wasn’t terrible, ranking in the middle of the pack in sacks, but it’s not as good as it needs to be. Not if the Blackshirts want to dominate like the old days.
Also, with his size, he should do a great job of setting the edge. The run defense, as we all know, was not good in 2018. In fact, it hasn’t been very good for years and adding a big body like Robinson who can hold up in an odd or even front is huge.
Beyond what it means for Nebraska football on the field, landing Robinson shows that Frost has some serious pull. He’s gotten kids from all across the country and Robinson gives the Huskers their fifth top-300 player.
