Nebraska Football: 5 things we learned from Huskers win against Illinois
Martinez just gets better and better
With each and every week, Martinez seems to get better and better. Against Illinois, he took another step in his development and he carved up the Lovie Smith defense to the tune of 290 yards through the air, as well as 52 on the ground.
Martinez missed on just 11 passes on the day and was extremely sharp. The Huskers went just 4-of-12 on third down, however, Martinez helped Nebraska football convert three fourth downs. He ran for two and threw for another, the latter which set up a touchdown run by Devine Ozigbo in the third quarter. That made the margin 45-21. At that point, the game was out of reach.
Martinez was intercepted in the end zone, which was his second straight game with a red-zone turnover, yet even that is pretty nit-picky.
Martinez has been better than advertised this season, there is no question about that and he is one of the reasons why Nebraska football fans have to be really excited about the future.
