Nebraska football put together an impressive performance in a 54-35 win over Illinois. Here are five things we learned from the Huskers win.

Illinois may have been a 4-5 team coming into Saturday’s game at Memorial Stadium, yet beating the Fighting Illini was critically important for Nebraska football.

It wasn’t just important for the future either, it was important for the present. The 19-point win showed that head coach Scott Frost does have Nebraska football headed in the right direction. Now, the Huskers will have the chance to prove that even more in the next two weeks against Michigan State and Iowa.

But before getting too far ahead of ourselves, let’s get back to Illinois, a team that is now 4-6 and desperately needed a win for bowl eligibility. Nebraska isn’t going bowling, yet, the Huskers played with urgency and scored 38 points in the first half to bury Illinois.

The defense could have played better, however, there were some very positive signs there too. Nebraska’s offense also rolled up more than 600 yards of total offense. Adrian Martinez had over 340, with 290 and three touchdowns in the air.

All in all, Frost and the Huskers have to be pleased. They got their best win of the season and they got it in a convincing fashion. A loss would have said a lot; it would have highlighted a lack of progress.

Instead. Nebraska football got a big win and for another week, the future looks bright. With that in mind, here are five things we learned from Illinois including what this win says about the future.
