The Nebraska football team has been going back and forth on who and when to play but it looks like an announcement is on the horizon.

Before you get too excited, no Bo Pelini isn’t coming back to Lincoln this season. While the Nebraska football team appears ready to lock down a replacement opponent for Akron, it won’t be Youngstown State.

We know this because the Omaha World-Herald reports that numerous sources have told them the school is close to finding an opponent for a game on October 27. The opponent is said to be an FCS team but the Fightin’ Penguins already have a game on their schedule that day.

The news also rules out Turner Gill making a triumphant return. While his Liberty Flames have that weekend off, they’ve made the jump to FBS.

It should be pointed out Liberty already has 12 games so they would have either needed special dispensation from the NCAA or to back out of one. In other words, those hoping for a matchup of former Husker quarterbacks are going to have to wait until at least 2023 when we have a hole in our non-conference slate.

The October 27 date was a bye week for the Cornhuskers, but once it became apparent the team would need another game, most members of the coaching staff and team knew it was likely going away.

During a recent Big Ten teleconference, head coach Scott Frost made his wishes pretty clear. Nebraska had been kicking around the idea of playing the make-up game in December during conference championship week.

Frost said he didn’t want a game scheduled then because he intended to be playing in the Big Ten title game. While a 0-2 start to the year for the Nebraska football team makes that seem a bit ambitious, it’s become clear he was quite serious about keeping the weekend open “just in case.”
