C+. . . . RUNNING BACKS

I am aware that some Nebraska football fans might find this grade a bit unfair. The Huskers running backs were likely the best unit on the field today, especially on offense.

Maurice Washington announced his presence as a real weapon for the Huskers against Troy as he carried for 92 yards on just 14 rushes. Greg Bell added another 64 yards and 14 carries of his own.

As unit, the backs had 181 yards on 37 carries. That’s decent but it’s far from great. They also didn’t have a single touchdown.

The longest run of the day was for 29 yards. The group added five catches for 27 yards.

If the Huskers had won today, this grade is likely a little better. There is the argument too that the offensive line simply wasn’t making enough holes.

When all is said and done, the Nebraska football team needed the running backs to put in fantastic performances. Instead, they were good but not great.

In the world of handing out grades, C is passing. The running backs certainly “passed.” The unit as a whole didn’t do much more than that for a Nebraska football team still looking for someone in this group to really stand out.
