Nebraska football’s Tristan Gebbia reportedly begins transfer process
The Nebraska football team got some especially bad news on Monday when Tristan Gebbia reportedly asked for his official release.
Well, that moved entirely too quickly. The Nebraska football team could be down to one scholarship quarterback by the end of the day.
Less than an hour after reports started trickling out that Tristan Gebbia had missed practice and was “weighing his options,” new reports say he has officially asked for his release. That’s the first step towards transferring.
The same reports say he has every intention of going through with it. I did in fact, layout, less than an hour ago why it’s a bad idea for him. I also laid out why it’s a bad situation for the team.
What hasn’t been covered is just why this is moving so quickly. Partially because it seems to have taken everybody by surprise.
During his afternoon press conference, head coach Scott Frost made it clear he was a bit surprised. He said Gebbia’s original reaction was that he took it well.
Something changed between Sunday and Monday morning. Perhaps he just read the press clippings and decided he was done.
Maybe the coaches told him something that took a while to sink in. Whatever the reason, it appears a sales job is going to need to be done.
The Huskers need Gebbia to stay. Not just for depth but because if the coaches were being honest, he’s more like a 1B than a number two quarterback.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this whole mini-soap opera is that the coaches felt the closeness between Gebbia and Martinez would help whoever didn’t win the job stay upbeat.
One has to hope this is just a kneejerk reaction. Keep in mind the Nebraska basketball team went through this with Jordy Tshimanga over the winter.
He asked for his release and eventually thought better of it. It wasn’t until later he changed his mind for good.
Tristan Gebbia isn’t officially out the door just yet but the situation for the Nebraska football team just got quite a bit more dire.
