Nebraska recruiting enthusiasts got a nice surprise Monday. Just when we thought Big Ten Media days were going to be the story, Mosai Newsom stole the show.

Mosai Newsom is officially part of the 2019 Nebraska recruiting class. The Iowa defensive end made the announcement on Monday morning, just hours before his future head coach is scheduled to make his first official Big Ten Media Days appearance.

Media days was expected to dominate the news cycle over the next few days. We’re getting ever closer to fall camp and then the regular season. It appears Newsom has a nice flair for the dramatic.

Newsom, out of Iowa is a big win for a Huskers defense that is desperately looking for help on the d-line. He’s not someone who is going to break the radar when it comes to big names, but his talent level is one the Huskers’ coaches have been after for quite a while.

247Sports has him ranked as the fifth best player in the state of Iowa and the 48th best weakside defensive end in the 2019 class. Newsom is a 3-star prospect that might see his stock rise a bit now that he has officially committed to the Huskers.

The defensive end, who officially becomes the 14th commit of the 2019 class for the Nebraska football team, was not heavily recruited outside his home region. The Huskers did steal him out from under the nose of several Big Ten rivals.

Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan State and Northwestern had all offered him. Getting one over on the Hawkeyes, who we still owe payback for Noah Fant is a nice touch.

When talking about Nebraska recruiting, Newsom is actually the second commit over the last few days the Cornhuskers got that Iowa had its heart set on. Nick Henrich was someone Nebraska football fans were a bit nervous might head to Iowa once upon a time.
