The dead period doesn’t mean everything stops for Nebraska recruiting.

Nebraska recruiting followers know that this particular period of the cycle is a little deader than others. That doesn’t mean there isn’t good news here and there.

Some good news certainly popped up on Sunday afternoon when 4-star linebacker David Gbenda named the Nebraska football team among his favorite schools. The Katy, Texas star has a total of 24 offers and he narrowed the list of programs he’s looking at to his Top 10.

In addition to the Huskers, Gbenda is still looking at Notre Dame, Houston, Texas, Michigan, Texas A&M, Washington, Ole Miss, TCU and Missouri. You’ll notice there is quite the soft spot for his home state teams.

The definite

Texas

area lean means it might be pretty hard to pull the linebacker away from home. At the same time, 247Sports’ crystal balls only have Texas as a

60 percent chance

at getting the defender.

When you take into account how interested he appears to be in staying close to home, based on his Top 10, the Longhorns not being a 100 percent seems to be an opening. Perhaps even better for the Huskers, Gbenda’s future home is rather cloudy outside of the Longhorns.

That could be a very good thing for a Nebraska program that has quite a few commits already, but not a ton of 4-star prospects in the 2019 class. Gbenda is the 11th best inside linebacker in the class and the 35th best player in the state of Texas according to 247 Sports.

Those following Nebraska recruiting should be following this saga rather closely. If the 4-star linebacker can be convinced to come to the Midwest rather than staying in the Southeast, David Gbenda could be a major steal for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He could end up being one of the crown jewels of the class.
