The Nebraska football team lost a bit of a recruiting battle on Sunday as an offensive guard they had been targeting chose the Cal Golden Bears.

The Nebraska football team gained one offensive line commit this weekend. It also lost out on one.

While Matthew Anderson is among the 2019 commit list, a Texas offensive tackle by the name of McKade Mettauer has committed to the Cal Bears. For a time, Mettauer was looking hard at the Cornhuskers.

Scott Frost and company were looking hard at Mettauer as well. Nebraska was even among the final three for the offensive lineman, but in the end, he pulled the trigger for the Pac 12 school.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the Houston prospect’s recruitment is that he wasn’t being recruited by the major Texas schools. This is despite the fact that he’s rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and Rivals.

247Sports has rated him as the 33rd best offensive guard in the entire 2019 class. It’s a safe bet that if he had wanted to commit to the Cornhuskers they would have been taking him.

Because they are going hard after linemen these days, there is a way the team can mitigate the loss. As is the case with every commit this early in the year, there is also the chance Mettauer could change his mind along the way.

The one thing that has to be said about the way the Nebraska football team is going after it’s recruiting, is that when it comes to the middle of the road players like McKade Mettauer, the staff tends to spend on the next one up rather than attempting to change the mind of those players who have decided to go somewhere else. That approach has changed when a player does officially decommit. For now, it is indeed, “next man up” for this staff.
