Logan Smothers has certainly liked what he’s heard out of the Nebraska recruiting pitch. It’s what he hasn’t heard that might win the day.

While Ohio State has shown real interest, they haven’t offered yet. Neither have any of the other big schools from his home region. He does have offers from Troy, UAB and Southern Miss, so his list isn’t devoid of FBS schools.

While the Nebraska football team might be carrying two quarterbacks in the 2020 class, they don’t have one just yet. Even if Garcia does eventually announce he’s a Husker, it won’t be until right around that class’ signing day.

The Buckeyes, meanwhile have added at least one quarterback already. Jack Miller, a 4-star prospect out of Arizona committed to OSU last weekend.

It appears that commitment has clouded the prospects of Smothers being offered by Urban Meyer and company. While Smothers does seem a bit disappointed that Ohio State might not be in the mix as far as an offer, he told Evan Bland that the Nebraska football team was always the frontrunner.

“Before that, Nebraska was at the top of my board,” he said. “Right now, it’s going to take a lot for me not to go there.”

Those following Nebraska recruiting closely know it’s way too early to count your chickens before they hatch.

Despite that well-worn proverb, it appears as though the Nebraska football team could be getting their first 2020 quarterback well ahead of schedule.
