Scott Frost isn’t the only former Nebraska football quarterback who will be a head coach this coming season.

Former Nebraska football quarterback Bobby Newcombe replaced Scott Frost in the Huskers’ quarterback room. Could the two players soon be allies when it comes to Nebraska recruiting?

Newcombe was named to his first head coaching job earlier this week. The former quarterback and wide receiver will be leading a 3A level powerhouse Arizona high school football team in Queen Creek (Az.) Casteel High.

According to Arizonacentral.com Newcombe had been serving as an assistant coach and the promotion was a bit of a surprise. Casteel’s coach, Spencer Stowers abruptly announced he would be leaving the school while the team was traveling to a camp.

Stowers’ wife has apparently taken a job in Minnesota and he’s decided to keep the family together and move there as well. It was Stowers’ choice to name the former Husker as the new head man.

“It was an easy choice,” Stowers said. “The players, community and staff at Casteel respect him because of his passion and work ethic. He puts his students first.”

Putting his players and students first sounds pretty familiar. Scott Frost’s dedication to his team is one of the reasons he’s been able to have so much success so early in his career.

Newcombe certainly doesn’t take over a team where the cupboards are bare. Casteel went 14-0 last season and won the AIA State Football Championship. He’s also continuing to build relationships in Arizona.

After he was done with Nebraska football, Newcombe played a season at wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. He stuck around once his playing days came to an end and is now looking like he might turn into a bit of a power broker in the high school ranks.

While Casteel isn’t at the highest level of football in Arizona, he can still serve as a kind of conduit for Nebraska football coaches who want to recruit in the state. Considering that Frost and company have been going there for JUCO talent since they arrived in Lincoln, it would seem the high school ranks are next.
