Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost was almost the Florida Gators’ head coach this season. It was closer than most people thought.

Remember right before the Nebraska football team had a head coach, there were rumors that Scott Frost might not be headed to Lincoln after all?

It turns out that Frost to the Florida Gators was closer to happening than Cornhusker fans were willing to believe. In fact, it appears there were very serious talks between Frost and the SEC school. There was even an offer.

Frost and the rest of the Husker staff have been touring the state of Nebraska on a  kind of good will tour this week. Along the way, they have told many a story.

One of the most interesting stories of them all came from new tight ends coach Sean Beckton. According to the Omaha World Herald’s Chris Heady, Beckton says Frost had an official offer to coach the Gators.

It turns out that while he felt the pull of the Cornhuskers when it came to listening to leaving UCF, it wasn’t totally a feeling of loyalty that led Frost to turn down Gators.

Beckton says that when the Gators offered the job to Frost, they told him he would not be able to bring his entire staff with him. It’s not clear whether Florida wanted a mix of coaches, whether they had a couple they wanted to keep, or they had a problem with one or more of Frost’s choices.

What is clear that Scott has a real loyalty to this group. He made that clear in his introductory press conference for the Nebraska football team.

When Scott Frost talked about wanting to keep his staff in place, it turns out he wasn’t fooling around. It turns out not being able to bring everyone over was a deal breaker.
