Did the Nebraska football team’s coaches miss on a chance to get one of the best quarterback prospects in the entire country in Hunter Johnson?

While the Nebraska football team’s recruiting efforts have been paying off over the last few weeks, there is one big recruit the Cornhuskers might have missed out on. Hunter Johnson announced on Monday that he was transferring from Clemson to Northwestern.

Once one of the top quarterback prospects in the country when he committed to the Tigers, he sat out a year ago and announced he was leaving the program earlier this spring. When he announced he was leaving, Husker fans likely thought getting a shot at someone who was going to a recent national champion was a long shot.

Now that he’s headed to the Wildcats, the question has to be asked, did the Cornhuskers’ coaching staff miss out on a big one?

It’s entirely possible that Scott Frost and company reached out to Johnson and were rebuffed. Certainly, there’s a little more competition at the quarterback position in Lincoln than there is in Evanston.

Johnson will have to sit out this season, but next year, he’s the heir apparent at Northwestern. At Nebraska, he would be fighting off Tristan Gebbia and Adrian Martinez.

He might be fighting off Luke McCaffrey as well. The bottom line is that Johnson is a hotter prospect than most of the recruits the Huskers have gone after in the last few years.

Yes, Northwestern is technically in a better spot than the Cornhuskers are as far as record last season. The Nebraska football recruiting efforts could have got a big boost from getting the Clemson transfer. It seems as if he was ready to go to the Wildcats, he might have been ready to come to Lincoln. Here’s hoping this wasn’t a situation where the coaching staff didn’t put in enough time to win Hunter Johnson over.
