Former Nebraska football quarterback Patrick O’Brien has been a busy man now that school is out.

Former Nebraska football quarterback Patrick O’Brien has now visited at least two potential transfer targets. Earlier this week he took a trip to Fort Collins, Colorado presumably to check out what the Colorado State football program has to offer.

Just days before that, he reportedly took a trip to Florida International to see Butch Davis’ program. You might remember that Davis just recently sent a quarterback to the NFL, not a small feat when talking about the size of that program.

O’Brien announced shortly after the Cornhuskers’ spring game that he was going to be transferring to another school. The announcement was far from a shock considering he came the Lincoln to play for Mike Riley and a pro-style offense.

One of the most interesting things to watch when it comes to O’Brien is the love and support Husker fans have put on his feed. Football fans, in general, can be a surly bunch, especially when a player decides he doesn’t want to be a part of the program anymore.

So far, comments on his tweet about Fort Collins has uniformly been met with words of encouragement and even some excitement that he’s looking at a school like Colorado State.

No doubt, at least some of the warm fuzzy reactions are born out of the fact that he’s not looking to transfer inside the Big Ten, or to a rival school like Oklahoma. Still, the fans’ responses tell me that the division and the ruptures this program has gone through over the last few years is starting to heal.

It also says something about the way O’Brien has carried himself throughout this process. There were plenty of people who thought he should have taken over the starting job last year.

While he played well in relief, Riley stood by Tanner Lee and kept O’Brien on the bench down the stretch. Then Riley was fired and Scott Frost was brought in.

While Tanner Lee decided to go pro shortly after the hire, O’Brien announced he would stick it out and see how he fit in the new offense. He never said a bitter or unkind word once it became clear he wasn’t a great fit.

Wherever Patrick O’Brien goes, whether it’s Colorado State, Florida International, or somewhere else, it’s clear that there will be a contingent of Nebraska football fans cheering him on.
