Tanner Lee draft choice exposes schism between Nebraska football fans
If you’ve read this far, you’re still probably coming down on one of two sides. Either you buy 100 percent into the idea that once a player for the Nebraska football team laces it up for the Huskers, they will always be a Husker, or you don’t.
Tanner Lee isn’t even the only Cornhuskers’ quarterback to get this kind of treatment. Anyone who remembers the Bill Callahan era remembers the fiasco that was Sam Keller.
Keller arrived in Lincoln much the same way Lee did. He was billed as the guy who was going to save the program.

Keller was also someone who put up big touchdown numbers but also threw entirely too many interceptions (10 picks in nine games played.) Of course, Sam Keller also played on an offense that was pretty darn good.
The defense was the big problem for Keller and Callahan. Keller also got himself benched as the season went on. Mike Riley stood by Lee and he got better as the season crept to the finish line. Even if he wasn’t good enough.
It should also be pointed out that there was plenty of talk about Sam Keller being a bit of a malcontent during his time in Lincoln, especially when he was benched. By all accounts, Lee was a leader and was beloved by his teammates.
He certainly seemed to say all the right things. That’s generally something that goes pretty far.

In the end, what probably did more to poison Tanner Lee’s relationship with the Nebraska football faithful was indeed the losses. That’s not fair, but it appears to be the way of the world at the moment.
