The Nebraska football team isn’t going to have a Heisman contender just yet.

No, the Nebraska football team isn’t the surprise Heisman contender provider just yet, but man, it feels like it could happen sooner rather than later under Scott Frost’s offense.

Sporting News believes we will see at least one surprise Heisman candidate though. They point out that quarterback Dwayne Haskins might be a new starter, but he’s got the tools to be a headache to opposing defenses.

He’s certainly going to have a supporting cast that could make the Buckeyes offense as scary as any in the country. If they can also put a terrifying defense on the field, and rack up the wins, it’s going to be hard to ignore the dual-threat quarterback.

It’s not just that Haskins is going to be a contender, Sporting News believes the Buckeyes quarterback is going to be a finalist. Those are big expectations for a guy who hasn’t been a starter and will be taking over a big stage.

While Wisconsin’s Johnathan Taylor might not be a Heisman contender, he did get mention as a sophomore to watch, right alongside another Buckeye in J.K. Dobbins.

A year ago, Dobbins averaged 7.2 yards per carry. It’s hard to think that if he did that again that he wouldn’t also be a contender. Taylor stands to be in that race too. It’s entirely possible the winner of a potential championship game matchup would also provide the Heisman winner.
