Nebraska football’s freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez is being overlooked by SI’s Top 10 incoming freshman quarterback list.
When Adrian Martinez signed with the Nebraska football team, it marked one of the best freshman quarterback recruits the team has signed in quite some time. Even more exciting that getting a four-star quarterback is the stuff Martinez can do on the field.
That’s why it’s a bit surprising that in a new Sports Illustrated list of the top incoming freshman quarterbacks, Martinez is nowhere to be found. The list has a number of players that were quite comparable to Martinez, but it almost feels as though the author forgot the dual threat quarterback existed.
Interestingly, no Big Ten teams at all appear on the list. Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, and Georgia’s Justin Fields make the list because they were among the best recruits in the country. What makes things a bit more surprising is the recruits who were right next to Martinez as far as the best at their position.
Emory Jones from Florida might be the most galling addition. The quarterback out of Georgia was the fifth ranked dual-threat quarterback according to 247Sports.

Adrian Martinez was the 7th ranked dual-threat quarterback. He’s also going into an offense that generated the best offense in the country at UCF.
Jones and Florida are going to be picking up the pieces with Dan Mullen, a man who has been a good coach, but hasn’t been an innovator the way Frost has been at UCF. It should be pointed out that Florida and the Nebraska football team won all of four games. This isn’t a situation where the Gators are coming from a better place.
What this list does show is that the Nebraska football team is going to need to prove themselves. If Scott Frost can do what he did at UCF, revisiting this list next year is gonna be plenty interesting.
