Nebraska Football Spring 2017: What Practice No. 6 Taught Us
The Nebraska football team finished up their final practice before spring break in pads after two-and-a-half hours on the practice fields. Here’s what we took away from the activities.
- Tanner Lee and Patrick O’Brien continued to get the majority of snaps while Tristian Gebbia did get an opportunity or two.
- There appears to be a bit of separation among the running backs with Tre Bryant and Mikale Wilbon getting a fair share of work with the No. 1 offense. Wyatt Mazour saw plenty of time with the No. 2s and Devine Ozigbo was seldom seen.
When asked about the situation at running back, Riley wasn’t ready to crack under the pressure of questioning just yet.
"“We do [see seperation], but we’re not going to announce anything about it. There’s no need to because we want them all to think [about] competition and performance and production and let them keep playing."
- The wide receiver corps still appears to be Stanley Morgan, De’Mornay Pierson-El and a number of question marks. There are players that are showing flashes such as Keyan Williams, JD Spielman and Brandon Reimers.
- Keyshawn Johnson, Jr. did not participate in contact as he is required to have two practices in shorts. His second will be when the team returns from spring break as they will have their mandated third practice with no pads at that time.
- The starting offensive line appears to be (from left to right) Nick Gates, Jerald Foster, Michael Decker, Tanner Farmer and David Knevel. The second string appears to be Cole Conrad, Jalin Barnett, John Raridon, Boe Wilson and Matt Farniok.
- The defense is starting to see some rotation as the starters and backups are getting more familiar with the installation. It wasn’t a surprise to see over the course of a longer practice.

- Joshua Kalu spent some time at safety which allowed Lamar Jackson to get in a large chunk of time with the No. 1 defense at cornerback.
- While the quarterbacks had a rough go during some red zone work, two young secondary members both snagged interceptions in sophomore JoJo Domann and redshirt freshman Dicaprio Bootle.
