With only two practices separating the Nebraska football team from a chance to destress, there are a few Huskers who could stand to cement a solid step forward before they head out.

Running back: Tre Bryant or Devine Ozigbo –  One of these two needs to do something to create at least a sliver of separation before they adjourn for a good long while. Bryant has had moments where he’s looked ready to lay tentative claim to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart.

While unlikely to get it formally in just two practices, being at the top of the ladder in the coaches’ minds should be a priority for both of these backs.

Wide receiver: Keyan Williams and J.D. Spielman – These two have impressed, especially Williams. Right now the wide receiver depth chart appears to be Stanley Morgan/De’Mornay Pierson-El followed by everyone else in a cluster.

This is where Williams and Spielman can truly break free from the pack. While there are receivers who could make a potential impact down the road in Brandon Reimers, Gabe Rahn and C.Y. Young, Williams and Spielman can make a rock solid case for a slot and outside spot right now, respectively.

Offensive line: Michael Decker – Nick Gates and Jerald Foster likely have their spots locked down, but the next closest has to be Decker. Tanner Farmer and David Knevel both face solid current competition and that will continue into fall practice.

Decker, on the other hand, appears to have a leg up on redshirt freshman John Raridon. With a strong week of practice, Decker could all but keep Raridon at arm’s length away from the starting center spot through the Spring Game. If that’s the case, some heavy pencil may be needed for the depth chart.

Outside linebacker: Marcus Newby – Congratulations are in orders as Newby is now a proud father. However, since Luke Gifford broke a bone in his hand and will be wearing a club for the time being,

Newby has to take advantage of the scenario to both step up his game to help take some pressure off Gifford and try to block out any distractions of missing his new bundle of joy during practice.

Cornerback: Eric Lee – He wasn’t mentioned during head coach Mike Riley’s initial depth chart of the 3-4 defense, but he’s had opportunities with the second string defense in practice.

While he’s unlikely to overtake anyone on either side for a starting spot, he could pull even with backups and set himself up for a leap up the chart with an impressive second half of practice once everyone returns on March 28.
