Nebraska Football’s Tommy Armstrong Is Getting Stronger As The Season Goes On

Nebraska football’s Tommy Armstrong had himself yet another whale of a game and for his efforts he was named the Big Ten player of the week.

Tommy Armstrong, when he is on, is one of the most electric players in college football. When he’s off, he’s one of the most worrisome players in college football.

For a good portion of this season, he has been on way more than he’s been off and that crystallized on Saturday during his performance against Northwestern. Armstrong was named the Big Ten player of the week on Monday morning, thanks to his passing for 246 yards and a touchdown and running for 132 yards on just 10 carries.

It’s the third time Tommy has garnered the honor during his career with the other two coming last season. What has to make Husker fans all over the country happy, is that the Nebraska football team is benefiting from a Tommy Armstrong who is improving as the season goes on.

In the first game of the year, it appeared the coaches were looking to largely take Armstrong out of the equation. He threw just 10 times, completing five passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball a bit, but carried 11 times for just 42 yards, though he did have two TDs.

In week two, against Wyoming, Tommy again found little running room, getting just 12 yards on 12 carries, though he did score another touchdown. Through the air, he’s completed 20 of 34 passes for a whopping 377 yards and three touchdowns. Against Oregon, Tommy began to put it all together.

While he completed just over 51 percent of his passes, he threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns, while running for 95 yards and a touchdown. In Evanston on Saturday, Tommy had his best overall game of the season.

Armstrong was both accurate, completing 62 percent of his passes for 246 yards and a touchdown. He was also dominant on the ground, carrying just 13 times for 132 yards. He didn’t find the end-zone on the ground (the first time this year) but he powered the running game that was able to outlast a game Northwestern squad.

If Tommy who now has 966 yards passing and eight touchdowns to just one interception and another 281 yards rushing and four more touchdowns can continue to improve … the Big Ten is in big trouble. Nebraska football was hard to beat when Tommy wasn’t at his best last year. They are going to be really hard to beat if the attack continues to be this good.
