Ameer Abdullah is recovering from offseason surgery and while he feels as though he will be ready to go for the season opener, he’s not there yet.

This might be the make or break season for Abdullah. Last year, his rookie season, he shared the load with a couple of other backs but still had a very solid first season. Abdullah carried 143 times for 597 yards and two touchdowns.

This year was supposed to be the year where he might have established himself as the top running back option. While he’s still the clear favorite, all eyes should be on him as training camp goes on to see how he’s healing and what his competition is doing.

According to ESPN, the Lions running back was able to make it to the practice field for the opening of training camp, but he was the only non-quarterback who was wearing the red “don’t hit me” jersey.

While the former Husker has been cleared to practice fully, the Lions clearly understand his value and are playing it very safe coming into the season.  “Right now it’s a day-by-day process so I’m taking it day-by-day at the discretion of the coaches and everything,” Abdullah told ESPN.com. “They care for my best interests right now and they know where they want me to be for Game 1 and I’m confident at this point I’ll be where I need to be for Game 1.”

Those who are nervous that all the talk about taking it easy is really a smokescreen for his shoulder injury being worse than stated can relax. He did indeed practice and even showed off some moves, though obviously didn’t have to try and work through contact.
